Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids…
Great photo opportunity tonight, with Earth directly between Mars and the Sun.
It is puffickly ha-yuge!!! Right now it is much bigger than any star in the sky. Obvious even with the naked eye, and Jacob and I could see details with a spotting scope.
Actual Mars opposition was last night, but it will be easily viewable for a several days. Opposition occurs when a planet is 180 degrees from the sun when viewed from Earth. In other words, Mars is rising in the east just after sunset; the magnification of Earth’s atmosphere causes the large apparent size of the planet, and makes it appear more red than usual.
Take a look on a good clear night like tonight; it is absolutely beautiful!
